SANITARY ADMINISTRATION.
WATER SUPPLY
I am once again indebted to Lt.Col.E.P.W.Mackenzie,
Director of Water Examination, Metropolitan Water Board, for
the following report upon the supply for the Borough:-
"The water supply to the Borough of Twickenham is
provided by the Metropolitan Water Board from their works at
Hampton. The water is derived from the River Thames and after
storage in reservoirs at 'Walton and Littleton is pre-chlorinated
and passed through primary and secondary sand filters. Finally
it is chlorinated before being pumped into supply. A contact
tank is in the course of construction and should be in use in
1948. Means will then be available to complete the disinfection
of the water before it is pumped to the consumers.
Samples of the water in all stages of purification
are analysed daily at the Laboratories of the water Board. The
results for 1946 are given below.
All new and repaired mains are chlorinated before
being restored to use and samples of water from them are tested
bacteriologically.
The water is not plumbo-solvent.
We have no information with regard to the proportion
of the total number of dwelling houses in Twickenham which are
supplied by the Board but of these all are supplied direct and
not by means of standpipes."
