COMMON LODGING HOUSES
There is one Common Lodging-house in the Borough. This was
kept in a satisfactory condition during the year and the registration
was renewed.
SCHOOLS
Inspection of the sanitary arrangements at the elementary
and secondary schools was maintained by the Sanitary Inspectors during
the year.
It was not necessary to close any of the schools on account
of infectious disease among the children.
PETROLEUM (REGULATION) ACTS 19S8 & 1936
During the year 175 visits were paid by the Sanitary
Inspectors to premises upon which petroleum spirit or carbide of
calcium was stored. 99 licences were issued in respect of these
premises.
SHOPS ACT, 1954
No formal action under the provisions dealt with by the
Department was necessary.
The certificate granted in previous years for ono shop under
Section 10 (2) of the Act was continued.
RODENT CONTROL
It became evident during the year that the staff of two
rodent operatives, who were attempting to deal with a number of block
schemes and at the same time satisfy occupiers who made individual
complaints, could not cope with the work. The difficulty was that an
operative engaged on a block scheme might have the work interrupted and
the progress of a scheme delayed or spoiled when odd complaints had to
be dealt with. The Ministry of Food suggested that it would be
desirable to appoint a Rodent Officer to take charge of the work, and
an additional operative. The Corporation agreed to these suggestions
and a Rodent Officer was appointed and commenced duty in December 1945.
A scheme for the re-organisation of this work was under consideration
at the end of the year and will be dealt with fully in my next report.
