BIRTHS
The live births registered in the Borough in 1942 numbered
1,525, giving a birth rate of 16.49 per 1,000 of the
population (England and Wales 15,8).
The births were made up as follows:-

The number of births represents an increase of 291
compared with the previous year.

Still births.
There were 47 still births registered during the year
giving a still birth rate of 29.9 per 1,00.0 total (live and
still) births.
DEATHS
The nett deaths registered in the Borough during 1942
were:-

This represents a decrease of 121 compared with the
previous year.
The death rate per 1,000 of the population was 11.6,
the same as that for England and Wales.
An analysis of the death returns shows that the main
causes of death were:-
(1) Diseases of the heart and circulatory system
(2) Cancer
(3) Bronchitis, Pneumonia and other respiratory diseases
(4) Tuberculosis.
