The birth-rate for the year was 13.4 per 1,000 of
the population as compared with 14.2 for England and Wales.
The figures for 1940 were 14,67 and 14.6 respectively.
DEATHS
The nett deaths registered in the borough during
1941 were:–

The death rate per 1,000 of the population for the.
year was 13.0. The death rate for England and Wales was 12.9.
The figures for 1940 were 14.8 and 14.3 respectively.
The main causes of death during the year were heart
disease (295) cancer (183) intra-cranial vascular lesions (103)
bronchitis (65) pneumonia (64) and tuberculosis (61).
MATERNAL MORTALITY
The number of deaths from puerperal causes during
1941 were as follows Puerperal and post-abortive sepsis - 1,
other maternal causes - 1.
The maternal mortality rate per 1,000 total (live and
still) births, was 1.6 compared with 2.23 for England and Wales.
