BIRTHS.
The births registered in the "borough in 1940 are given
in two forms, one for calculating the birth rate, the other
for calculating infantile and maternal mortalities.

The birth rate for the year was 14.67 per 1,000 of the
population as compared with 14.6 for England and Wales.
DEATHS
The nett deaths registered in the borough during 1940 were
Males 701 Females 694 Total 1395
The crude death rate per 1,000 of the population for
the year was 14.8 and the adjusted death rate after use of
the Registrar General's comparability factor was 14.9.
The death rate for England and Wales was 14.3. The figures,
for 1939 were 10.46, 10.35 and 12.1 respectively.
The rise in the number of deaths was mainly due to heart
disease, intra-cranial vascular lesions, bronchitis, pneumonia
and violence. The latter includes deaths from enemy action.
The severe spell of cold weather experienced during the year,
together with changed modes of living may have contributed
to the increase.
