MATERNAL MORTALITY
The number of deaths from puerperal causes during 1940
were as follows:- Puerperal and post-abortive sepsis - 1,
other maternal causes - 1.
The maternal mortality rate per 1,000 total (live and
still) births, was 1.4 compared with 2.16 for England and Wales.
infantile MORTALITY
The deaths of infants under one year during 1940
numbered 63, producing an infantile mortality rate of 45.8 per
1,000 live births, as compared with 26.4 and 45.8 for 1939 and
1938 respectively. The rate for England and Wales in 1940
was 55.
Congenital malformations, premature birth, etc. caused 33
(or 52 per cent) of the total infant deaths.
