High Street,
TEDDINGTON.
To the MAYOR, ALDERMEN AND COUNCILLORS
OF THE, BOROUGH OF TWICKENHAM.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my Annual
Report on the health and sanitary condition of the
Borough during the year ended 31st December, 1939.
The report is drawn up in accordance
with. directions issued by the Ministry of Health, and
is compiled as an ordinary report.
I very much regret' the delay which has
occurred in the preparation of this report; the work
on it has had to be set aside from time to time on
account of urgent and pressing duties brought about
by the War. Points of interest in the report are the
continued low death rate for the Borough as compared
with the Country as a whole;the particularly gratifying
low infant mortality rate;the drop in the incidence of
diphtheria and scarlet fever as compared with last year;
and the welcome increase in the number attending for
diphtheria immunization.
With the outbreak of war in September,
the duties imposed, on the Department by reason of Civil
Defence and numerous other matters have proved a heavy
burden. I desire to acknowledge with grateful thanks
the enormous, amount of work carried out by the staff of
the Health Department, who have,at all times been most
helpful, willing and loyal. I desire also to acknowledge
with thanks the friendly co-operation and help
which I have received from my colleagues in other Departments
of the Corporation, and the members of the Council
who have all been most, ready to assist.
I am,Mr.Mayor,Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
JOHN MADDISON.
Medical Officer of Health.
