STATISTICS, SOCIAL CONDITIONS AND GENERAL PROVISION
OF HEALTH SERVICES FOR AREA.
POPULATION.
The Registrar General's estimate of the
population for the middle of the year 1939 is given
as two separate figures,vis.98,580 which is used
for the calculation of the birth rate,and 97,440
used for the calculation of death rate or the incidence
of notifiable diseases.
BIRTHS.
The births registered in the borough in 1939 are also given in two forms,one for calculating the birth rate,the other for calculating infantile and maternal mortalities.

The birth rate for the year was 14.2 per
1,000 of the population as compared with 15.0 for
England and Wales.
DEATHS
The nett deaths registered in the borough
during 1939 numbered 1020,and were made up as follows:
males, 523; females 497.
The crude death rate per 1,000 of the population
for the year was lO.46,the adjusted death rate
after use of the Registrar General's comparability
factor being 10.35. The death rate for England and
Wales was 12.1.
