Smallpox.
No case of smallpox was notified during the year.
Pneumonia, Malaria and Dysentry.
Pneumonia. There were 68 cases of pneumonia notified as compared
with 75 for the previous year. The number of deaths recorded from this
disease was 53.
Malaria. No case of malaria was notified during the year.
Dysentery. Six cases of dysentery were notified during the year. Four
cases occurred in the same road, three being members of the same family.
There was no apparent connection between the cases, however, and no
specific mode of infection could be established. There were no deaths.
Acute Poliomyelitis, Acute Polio-encephalitis.
Three cases of acute poliomyelitis and one of acute polio-encephalitis
were notified during the year. There was one death from the former disease.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.

Puerperal Pyrexia.
15 cases of puerperal pyrexia were notified during the year. Eight were
treated in the West Middlesex County Hospital and five in Queen Charlotte's
Maternity Hospital. There were no deaths.
Enteric Fever.
No case of enteric fever was notified and no deaths from this disease
were recorded during the year.
(b) Non-notifiable Infectious Diseases.
Diseases under this heading include chicken-pox, measles, mumps and
whooping-cough. It is not possible to arrive at any definite figures with
regard to the incidence of these diseases during any year, but some indication
is given by the number of notifications sent in by the head teachers of the
schools in the borough. Every case brought to our notice in this way is
visited by one of the Health Visitors. The figures for 1938 are as follows:—
