Although the Borough has been almost trebled in area since the incorporation of the
districts of Teddington, Hampton and Hampton Wick, the general residential character is still
maintained, while the inclusion in the Borough of Bushy Park, Hampton Court Park and the
Fulwell Golf Links, together with the very generous provision of public parks provided by the
Local Authorities, must surely place Twickenham first among the towns of England in the extent
and beauty of its public open spaces.
The erection, by private enterprise, of houses and of blocks of flats continues apace,
and estimates of a future maximum population of the Borough, made before the erection of
flats was contemplated, have become fallacious and must of necessity be entirely conjectural.
Population.
The population estimated by the Registrar General at the middle of the year 1937 was
94,230, an increase of 4,090 over the combined population of the four constituent areas in the
year 1936. This increase has occurred principally in the areas of the former Borough of
Twickenham and of Hampton, the increases in Teddington and Hampton Wick being
comparatively small.
As the natural increase in the population, i.e., the excess of live births over deaths, during
the year was 363, the balance, 3,727, consisted of persons who had moved into the Borough from
other places.

The live birth rate, 14.9 per 1,000 of the population, was exactly equal to that of England
and Wales generally, and also to that of the 125 great boroughs and towns among which
Twickenham is now included.
