SECTION E.
INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
Milk Supply.
The enlargement of the Borough has not resulted in any increase in the register of persons
keeping cows.
Milk is pasteurised and bottled at one establishment, otherwise the greater part of the
milk sold is prepared and bottled in large wholesale dairies outside the Borough.
At the end of the year the following were registered:—
Cowkeepers 2
Dairymen 26
Purveyors of Milk 82
It was found that the arrangements made for cleaning and sterilising bottles were
unsatisfactory in three small dairies. On the attention of the dairymen being drawn to the
contraventions of the order, one ceased to bottle milk and the remaining two installed satisfactory
apparatus.
The following licences for milk sold under special designation were in force during the
year:—
Tuberculin Tested Milk 22
Pasteurised 32
No application was received in reference to accredited milk.
Meat and Other Foods.
There are 85 butchers' shops in the enlarged Borough. These were kept under close
supervision, 552 visits being paid for this purpose by the Sanitary Inspectors.
Although there are 13 registered and 7 licensed slaughter-houses in the Borough, only
10 were in use during the year. Of the remainder, many have not been used for several years.
Slaughtering has practically ceased in the area of the former Borough, but it has been
actively carried on in Teddington and Hampton. As slaughtering takes place on Sundays as well
as week-days and frequently late into the night, it has been necessary to organise a rota of the
inspectors to deal with this arduous duty, which included the examination of more than 10,000
carcases of animals killed in the Borough during the year.
