The details of the medical, ophthalmic and dental duties carried out are included in the
report of the School Medical Officer for the County of Middlesex.
The nurses of the staff of the Corporation visit all infant departments two or three times
weekly for the purpose of ascertaining the names of children absent on account of suspected
infectious disease and also to deal with any child present in class who appears to be unfit to
remain at school or may be suffering from an untreated minor ailment. The nurses subsequently
visit the home of a child thus found to be absent on account of infectious disease and advise the
parents where necessary.
The sanitary conveniences, water supplies, and lavatories of all the schools, both elementary
and secondary, have been visited by the Sanitary Inspectors quarterly throughout the year.
Petroleum Acts.
The Sanitary Inspectors are appointed Inspectors under the Petroleum Acts, and supervise
the stores where petroleum spirit and carbide of calcium are kept.
There were, in all, 114 premises in respect of which licenses to keep petroleum spirit had
been issued. Of these, fourteen were for the storage of petrol in cans, nine for storage of petrol
in tanks, and a small supply in cans, the remainder being for storage in underground tanks
only.
Six licences were granted for the keeping of carbide of calcium.
The number of visits paid by the Inspectors in connection with these premises was 229.
Factories and Workshops.
In accordance with the requirements of the Factory and Workshops Act, 1901, a statement
of inspection is submitted, together with the defects found, and the result of action taken.
