favourably with the rate of 42 for the four constitutent areas during the preceding year.
The number of infants who died before the first month of life was 25, giving a neonatal
death rate of 17.7 per 1,000 live births.
The following table shows the deaths of infants under 5 years of age which occurred

The total number of deaths under one year of age in this table differs slightly from those
in the table of the Registrar General, as the period to which they refer is not identical with that
from which these figures were taken.
Public Mortuaries.
At the date of the enlargement of the borough four mortuaries were in use, one in each of
the constituent areas. It was decided to close the mortuaries at Teddington and Hampton
Wick and to retain in use, for the time being, the buildings at Twickenham and Hampton.
The mortuary at Hampton is of modern construction and ample capacity. That at
Twickenham is out of date in construction and insufficient in size for the whole borough, but
is fitted with a modern refrigerating chamber. The question of closing the Twickenham mortuary
and using the Hampton mortuary exclusively after transference of the refrigeration plant was
under consideration at the end of the year.
During the year 75 bodies were brought into the mortuaries, and 48 post-mortem
examinations were made.
