CARE OF MOTHERS AND YOUNG CHILDREN
Health Services Clinics
In my last report I referred to the steps taken by the County Council
as local health authority to include in their draft ten-year development
plan a proposal to erect a health services clinic in the Borough.
It is gratifying to note that some positive action to achieve this aim
is being taken, and draft plans are in the course of being prepared to
enable the project to be commenced.
The Clinic is to be erected as an all-purpose one on the site of the
existing School Clinic in the High Road, South Woodford, and will
incorporate two dental suites.
Child Welfare Clinics
The seven Child Welfare Clinics in the Borough are held in hired
halls, some of them somewhat old. The new health services cliric will
enable at least one of these halls to be relinquished; steps are also in
hand to take over a former County Primary School for health service
purposes, which should improve the facilities still further.
The greatest co-operation exists with general medical practitioners.
Attendances at the Child Welfare Clinics during 1963 numbered—
13,883.
Nurseries and Child Minders Regulation Act, 1948
Under this Act any person who receives into her home for reward
three or more children under the age of five years to be looked after
for the day or a substantial part of the day, and premises, other than
those wholly or mainly used as a private dwelling, are required to be
registered with the Local Health Authority.
A growing demand by parents of young children for play groups and
nursery classes where these children can have the companionship of
others has resulted in an increasing number of registrations under the
Act during the year.
The number of premises and child minders in the Borough registered
with the County Council is:
Premises No. of children
Premises 8 223
Child Minders 3 16
Women's Welfare Clinic
Contraceptive advice is given on medical grounds on receipt of a
doctor's certificate. This advisory session is held monthly at 118 Hermon
Hill, 86 attendances being made during the year.
