Game Licences
Six licences to sell game were issued during the year.
Shops Act, 1950
An offence by the proprietor of a motor show room, selling secondhand
cars, was reported to the Public Health Committee on two
occasions on account of his premises being open for business on Sundays.
The Committee, after the first report, instructed the Town Clerk to send
a warning letter to the proprietor who ignored it, consequently when
the second report was made the Town Clerk was instructed to take
proceedings, which he did, and at the Magistrate's Court in October a
fine of £15 was imposed, the Council being granted 8 guineas costs.
No offences were observed in so far as closing times were concerned
and it can be noted that shops close well before the time of closing set
out in the Shops Act.
214 inspections were made during the year 1963.
Essex County Council Act, 1933
Massage and Special Treatment Establishments
Ten visits were made to these premises, all of which were reported
to the Essex County Council as being in a satisfactory condition.
Consumer Protection Act, 1961
Six visits were made and heaters tested but no infringements were
found and it would appear from observations that manufacturers are
now working strictly to the requirements of the Act regarding the
shielding of the heating elements and burners.
Swimming Bath Water
Six samples of water used at schools for swimming purposes were
examined by the laboratories. In five cases the reports were satisfactory
and because the sixth was not up to standard a further sample was
obtained after the school had been advised of the first result. This second
sample was reported to be satisfactory.
The short period of time during which the schools' swimming pools
are in use make the examinations of the water difficult. However, the
fact that the water is examined helps those responsible for the pools to
maintain a standard of water suitable for swimming purposes.
