3. CLINICS
The following clinics at 93, High Road, E.18 provide facilities for
the medical and dental inspection and treatment of school children.
(a) School Clinics
418 individual children attended to see the School Medical Officer
and a summary of the defects noted is given at Appendix "A".
(b) Dental
A whole-time dental service is provided and a summary of the
work carried out by the Dental Officer is given in Appendix "B".
The Dental Officer also visited a few schools to inspect the teeth
of every child in attendance.
(c) Speech Therapy
Four sessions a week are devoted to Speech Therapy. The Speech
Therapist also visits schools in the Borough to discuss the progress of
children with the teachers, and, where necessary, to offer advice.
(d) Specialist Services
Under an arrangement with the Essex County Council, the North
East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board provide staff for the following
clinic services at the School Clinic.
(i) Ophthalmic
An Opthalmologist attends three times a month.
(ii) Orthoptic
This service (for the correction of squints) commenced in January
with an Orthoptist attending for two sessions a week. Unfortunately
four changes of staff occurred during the year and in between these
changes, the clinic had to be closed and this, of course, interrupted
the patients treatment.
(iii) Orthopaedic
A consultant from Wanstead Hospital attends regularly once each
month to examine children referred by the School Medical Officer,
who is usually present at these visits. The Consultant also advises the
Physiotherapist on the treatment to be given.
(iv) Physiotherapy
A Physiotherapist attends regularly three times a week.
