The following table gives details of surface treatments:—

Number of inspections made by Public Health Inspectors130
Complaints received286
Revisits to premises228
Visits to adjacent premises58
Total premises visited562
Number of baiting points2394
Two sewer treatments were carried out during the year.

The first treatment using Warfarin with preservative (para-nitrophenol)
was affected to a certain extent by very heavy rain. It was not
possible to bait all manholes and some difficulty was experienced in
deciding whether the bait had been washed away or consumed by
the rats. 1318 manholes were baited, 508 showing complete prebait
takes and 103 partial takes.
The second treatment using bread rusk as bait base and zinc phosphide
as poison was restricted mainly to those manholes which had
shown prebait taken on the earlier treatment. Of the 615 manholes
baited, 314 showed complete prebait takes and 43 partial takes.
From the amount of poison consumed it is obvious that a heavy
kill was made on both treatments. There can be little doubt that
sewer treatments whilst not wiping out the sewer population help to
keep it within reasonable limits and to reduce the number of surface
infestations.
Essex County Council Act, 1933, Section 109.
During 1958 five further applications were made by caravan owners
requesting permission to keep caravans on the site in the Woodford
area of the Borough referred to in the Annual Report for 1957. Permission
was granted in all these cases.
Pet Animals Act, 1951
The number of persons registered as keepers of pet shops remained
at four. All were maintained in a satisfactory condition.
Rag Flock and other Filling Materials Act, 1951.
No additional registrations were made, the number of premises
registered remaining at one.
