SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES, 1956
Wanstead and Woodford
The number of children attending sixteen maintained schools in
the Borough was, at the end of the year, 6,908.
1. School Medical Inspections
A School Medical Officer visited each school in the Borough
during the year for the purpose of examining all the pupils due for
a routine inspection and any others brought forward for a special
examination at the request of the parent or Head Teacher. The
total number of children inspected was 2,382, in the age groups set
out below:

1st age group (5-7 years) 746 137 114
2nd age group (10-11 years) 713 77 63
3rd age group (14-16 years) 399 35 20
Other age groups 469 39 78

2. Minor Ailment Clinic
A medical officer was in attendance every Friday morning at the
School Clinic, 93 High Road, S. Woodford, E.18., to examine pupils
referred for special examination.
Particulars of the defects noted at these examinations are given
in Appendix "A."
3. Cleanliness Surveys
Owing to the shortage of nursing staff, it was not possible to
undertake the usual termly cleanliness survey of pupils attending
all the primary and secondary modern schools in the Borough.
However, 12,757 inspections were carried out and 16 individual
children were found to be suffering from head infestation. The
parents were informed and subsequent inspection of the children
concerned proved satisfactory.
4. Dental Inspection and Treatment
The facilities for providing dental inspection and treatment for
children attending the schools maintained by the Local Education
Authority remained unchanged. A whole-time dental officer and
dental attendant are in attendance every day at the School Clinic,
High Boad, South Woodford.
A summary of the work carried out at this clinic during 1956 is
shown in Appendix "B."
