The neo-natal mortality is the number of infants dying under one
month per 1,000 live births. During 1956, 10 infants died in the first
four weeks of life, a rate of 14.8.
Care of Premature Infants
During 1956, 33 premature infants were born to residents in the
Borough, 7 of these births taking place at home and 26 in hospital or
nursing home. 4 of the 7 born at home were alive at the end of one
month; 19 of the 26 born in hospital or private nursing home
survived.
In all cases of premature birth, special supervision is given after
the 14th day or after discharge from hospital.
Child Welfare Centres
Attendances at the six Child Welfare Centres have been well
maintained. Although some of the Centres are conducted in old
buildings, it can be said that the Borough is well catered for, as
apart from the northern area with its more scattered population,
generally there is a Centre within a mile radius of every home.
Attendance figures were made up as follows:
Baptist Church Hall, Aldersbrook 1385
Ashton Playing Fields, Woodford Bridge 2328
St. Barnabas' Church Hall, Snakes Lane 3658
Fullers Road, South Woodford 3126
Cromwell Hall, Nightingale Lane, Wanstead 2561
Holy Trinity, Hermon Hill, South Woodford 3177
TOTAL 16,235
Welfare Foods
The distribution of Welfare Foods continued on the lines indicated
in my last report, being undertaken entirely by members of the
Women's Voluntary Services.
Foods are available at all the Child Welfare centres in the
Borough during hours of session and also at the W.V.S. Headquarters,
79 High Street, Wanstead, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m.
My sincere thanks are due to the Women's Voluntary Services
members for the great assistance they give by undertaking this
service.
