SECTION E. FOOD AND DRUGS ACT, 1938
As in previous years a watch was kept on the condition of food premises
during the year under review.
Three cases of offences were found which were contraventions of the
Food and Drugs Act, 1938. The first was that of a cafe where the walls
and ceiling of the kitchen required cleansing and redecorating. Eyery
effort was made to get the work done without having to take proceeding
against the proprietor, and although such action was not necessary, the work
was executed only after the Council had threatened to take proceedings
against him.
The second and third cases concerned school canteens; at one school
the walls and ceilings of the kitchen and stores were found to be in a very
dirty condition and with wall distemper flaking badly, whilst at the other
school the walls and ceiling of the store were dirty.
As the schools concerned were under the control of the County Council
the matters were referred to their Area Office. Because the year under review
ended before redecorations were in hand, further details must be held over
for the 1952 report.
During the year the Department had its usual share of food containing
foreign bodies, one bottle of milk which contained potato peelings was
reported upon to the Public Health Committee, likewise a report was made
concerning a slug in another bottle of milk.
In the former case a warning letter was sent to the dairy firm, whilst
in the latter no action was taken because the Committee was not satisfied
that the slug was in the bottle at the time of bottling.
Two cases of foreign matter in bread were reported to the Public
Health Committee.
