SECTION E. FOOD AND DRUGS ACT, 1938
Whilst details are given later in this report in regard to sampling, it
is neccessary to report that complaints have been received concerning foreign
bodies being found in various articles of food. Such complaints have been
investigated and reports made to the Public Health Committee concerning
them.
Details of such cases are given below:—
Offence Action taken by Local Authority
Nail in scone Town Clerk communicated with baker.
Nail in cake Warning letter sent.
Wire in bread Warning letter sent.
Copper gauze in bread Warning letter sent.
Sausage deficiency Warning letter sent.
Ninety-three samples of food were submitted to the Public Analysts
for examination.
Three samples of sausages were found to contain preservatives (sulphur
dioxide) to the extent of 140 and 200 parts per million (pork sausages) and
270 Parts per million (beef). The permitted amount must not exceed 400
parts per million.
An offence was committed in the above cases because the sausages were
not so labelled as to indicate that a preservative had been added.
All the samples were informal.
Two tins of milk were submitted because of a complaint from the
trader. The analyst reported that the milk was stale.
Other than those indicated above, the samples were all reported to be
genuine.
In the report of the Medical Officer of Health for 1949, mention was
made of a sample of sausages reported to the Public Health Committee as
being deficient in meat to the extent of 10 per cent. This case was considered
by the Committee in January, 1950, and a warning letter was sent to the
firm concerned.
