Woodford is situated on the summit and eastern slopes of
a ridge between the Rivers Lea and Roding. The highest point
is 215 feet, and the lowest 40 feet, above sea level. The district
includes a small area to the east of the Roding. This is the
hamlet of Woodford Bridge, containing Dr. Barnardo's Boys'
Garden City.
Owing to the shallow bed of the Roding. and the large
quantity of water which is carried down in wet weather, this
river frequently overflows, inundating the adjacent fields. The
bridge by which the new Arterial Road to Southend crosses the
river further contributes to the flooding, by reason of the insufficient
