To the Chairman and Members of the
Chigwell Urban District Council
THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS
In accordance with the requirements of the Public Health Officers'
Regulations 1959, I have pleasure in presenting the Annual Report of the
Medical Officer of Health for the year 1972, which includes the Annual Report
of the Chief Public Health Inspector,
VITAL STATISTICS
The birth rate and the death rate, after adjustment to take into
account the age distribution of the local population, are both lower than the
rates for the previous year. Both continue to be well below the average
figures for the United Kingdom as a whole. Live births exceeded deaths by 242,
but the estimated total increase in the population of the District, allowing
for migration, was 300, the mid-1972 population estimate being 54,920.
Main causes of death were, as usual, heart diseases and cancers.
1 infant fell into a pond and drowned; another choked on a peach stone.

The 1971 Census for England and Wales included the following statistical information about the population of the District -
