The water supplied by the Board to the District naturally contains
about 0.3 parts per million of fluoride, which is well below the optimum of
1 part per million recommended for the maximum protection against dental
decay among the population.
Because of the large number of Authorities involved in the area
supplied by the Metropolitan Water Board it will inevitably take some
considerable time before universal agreement can be obtained to the
addition of fluoride to the local supply, and technical difficulties
overcome. In the meantime, much can be done to improve the condition of
children's teeth by discouraging nibbling between meals - especially of
sticky sweets and starches - and regular use of the toothbrush at bedtime.
