Refuse is at present disposed of by controlled tipping at a new
site leased to the Council for this purpose. The refuse is covered with
spoil, hardcore or other innocuous filling leaving, during tipping, only
a very small surface of refuse uncovered. Measures are taken against
flies and vermin as necessary from time to time.
This tip will be filled during the next few years. Further
and more long term arrangements for refuse disposal will have to be made.
Salvage of paper and rags continues to produce sales during the
year but the paper market continues not to be good. Nevertheless, the
Council has modernised the paper salvage arrangements in the form of a
new salvage building and new baling plant at the Depot at Rectory Lane,
Loughton.
Road gullies in County and District roads are emptied (and
re-sealed with clean water) by machine regularly during the year by
contract. As the Council took over County roads in April, 1963, there
has been a great increase in the number of gullies to be done.
