SECTION C
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA
1. (i) Water
The water supply of the District is provided by the Metropolitan
Water Board except for one house in the District where it is
drawn from a well. This house is in the ownership of the Conservators
of Epping Forest and is situated in the forest a long way
from the mains supply.
The water is piped and has been satisfactory both in quality
and quantity.
The number of houses is 16,609 and the estimated population
at mid-year was 60,420.
Five samples of water were taken during the year and the
report was satisfactory in each case.
(ii) Drainage and Sewerage
Soil drainage from the greater part of the District is by gravity
to the main disposal works at Luxborough where there is
modern plant constructed in 1938 and considerably enlarged in
the immediate post-war years. Further development and increasing
water consumption necessitate additional extensions
for which a major scheme has been submitted to the Ministry.
Due to financial restrictions, approval in principle has only so
far been given to the construction of more primary sludge
digesters. The works operate reasonably well and produce a fair
effluent. Consideration is being given to extra treatment of final
effluent to raise the standard of purity.
There is one small subsidiary works at Milters Lane which
was modernised after the war, and produces a consistently good
effluent.
One small area drains to the sewers of the Wanstead and
Woodford District, and thence to Chingford and the East
Middlesex scheme.
Most of the Hainault Estate drains to the sewers of the Dagenham
district and to that Authority's disposal works.
There are four out-lying pumping stations lifting the flow from
the low-lying areas up to the main gravity sewers.
There is a separate system of drainage in the District except for
the older parts where a number of combined sewers still exist.
