SECTION C
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA
1. (i) Water
The water supply of the District is provided by the Metropolitan
Water Board except for one house in the District where it is
drawn from a well. This house is in the ownership of the Conservators
of Epping Forest and is situated in the forest a long way
from the mains supply.
The water is piped and has been satisfactory both in quality
and quantity.
The number of houses is 16,683 and the estimated population
at mid-year was 59,740.
Five samples of water were taken during the year and the
report was satisfactory in each case.
(ii) Drainage and Sewerage
The main works at Luxborough have operated satisfactorily
and with reasonable effluent standard, although the need for
certain items to be completed and others to be extended (particularly
for sludge treatment) is being increasingly felt. Flow
is still increasing from development and the rising water consumption
per head of population. A major scheme for further
extensions has been submitted to the Ministry but except for a
few items has not yet been authorised to proceed. The new
relief outfall sewer to divert flow from the Northern Outfall
sewer has also been submitted to the Ministry but deferred on
account of financial restrictions. This scheme has a direct
relation to certain items of the Luxborough improvement
scheme.
The small subsidiary works at Millers Lane has continued to
operate satisfactorily and produces a good effluent.
The number of outlying pumping stations has reduced to
four and these have given adequate service throughout the
year. A scheme for replacing one of the older and smaller
stations with a new one is in course of preparation. Another is
intended to be replaced by a new and larger one in the course
of the Northern Outfall relief sewer scheme.
The problem of older sewers remains but no progress towards
solution is practicable whilst financial restrictions continue.
