Disposal of refuse has continued to be by controlled tipping
at a tip rented from a local contractor. This tip is now practically
filled and future tipping sites and space are presenting a serious
problem. Refuse has been levelled and compacted by bulldozer,
which also deposits and spreads covering material so that only
an absolute minimum area is at any time exposed. Measures
are taken as and when necessary to prevent infestation by flies
and vermin.
Salvage recovery, now comprising practically only paper and
rags, has been continued. Paper is bought in already separated
in trailers attached to the collection vehicles, and is sorted and
baled (by hand) by Council employees at the tip. During the
year, 480 tons of paper and 6 tons of rags were thus recovered
and sold.
Kitchen waste, collected from street bins and from school
and industrial canteens, has been conveyed to a concentrator
plant at Tottenham. The future of this service is uncertain, in
view of the possible removal of direction, freer licensing of
private collectors and negotiations for continued acceptance at
the Plant.
Road gullies (in streets maintainable by the inhabitants at
large) are emptied three times each year and re-sealed with
clean water. This is done by mechanical suction process under
annual contract.
