out under the various sections of the Act, being expanded so
far as this has been possible.
No major difficulties seem to have arisen, and I think a
fair summary would be to say that the year's work has been
mainly a continuation of existing services. Details of these
services, and of treatment provided during the year, appear
in Section B of this report.
National Assistance Act, 1948. Seven cases were referred
to me during the year for possible action under Section 47
of the National Assistance Act, 1948.
All these cases were investigated with the following
results:—
(a) Court Order under Section 47 1
(b) Removed to institutions permanently 2 With
(c) „ „ „ temporarily 2
(d) „ „ other accommodation 1 Patient's
(e) Action not completed by end of year 1 consent
Total 7
With regard to (a), the reason that the Council took
legal action in this case was because the person concerned,
an old lady, was infirm, not able to keep her flat clean and
was making herself a nuisance to the other tenants and her
neighbours by abuse and bad language. She also had a
history of mental instability.
The period named in the Court Order was three months
which was extended for a further three months. It was not
necessary to make more applications as the patient is now
content to stay in the institution permanently, and has greatly
improved in health.
The accommodation provided was at St. Margaret's
Hospital, Epping (Part III accommodation).
