The rapid growth of the new L.C.C. Housing Estates in
the district is being watched with interest, chiefly on account
of the high proportion of children and of tuberculous subjects
among the tenants. The mixture seems very explosive
at first sight, and certainly would be dangerous if not offset
by the fact that the living conditions as regards fresh air and
overcrowding are more favourable than the average, and very
superior indeed to those of the alternative environment from
which these people have come. It is estimated that one house
in 15 on these estates has one or more occupants on' the
tuberculosis register, comprising approximately 300 cases in
all. Only 56 of these, however, have shown evidence of
having been in an infectious condition during the past twelve
months, and many of them spend a good deal of their time
in hospital and sanatorium. The rate at which new cases of
tuberculosis occurred on the estates was no greater than that
in other parts of the district, and was less than the general
rate of incidence for England and Wales as a whole. There
is thus no evidence so far of any increased spread of this
disease in the district, but the influx of so many established
cases cannot be regarded entirely without anxiety for the
future.
The high proportion of children of susceptible age on
the new estates has again resulted in a relatively high rate
of incidence of measles and whooping cough per 1,000 of
the population. It is satisfactory to note, however, that these
rates are both below the corresponding figures for the previous
year.
The general health situation in the district has remained
satisfactory. The overall death-rate and the infant deathrate
are both below the corresponding figures for the previous
