Trade refuse continued to be collected on a scale
of charges and has been dealt with satisfactorily. This
service is used by a substantial number of traders in the
district.
Refuse was disposed of at a tip rented from a local
contractor, who provides certain buildings, covering
material and labour for levelling. The Council's own
employees sort and handle salvage at this tip.
Measures were taken against fly and vermin infestation.
Salvage operations, directed in particular to the
recovery of paper, rags and bottles, continued during
the year throughout the district. The total material
salvaged, sorted and disposed of was 280 tons, including
262 tons of paper. In addition 250 tons of kitchen waste
were collected and conveyed to a concentrator plant at
Stapleford Abbotts. Additional kitchen waste bins
have been placed on the streets to cover new development,
and a new "Karrier" covered lorry now makes
the collection from the bins.
Road gullies (in streets under the Council's
control) are emptied by a mechanical suction process.
The gullies are cleared three times in each year and
resealed with clean water after emptying.
