interested to recognise and deal with any matter likely to affect adversely the health of
individuals, groups or the community. The shortage of Public Health Inspectors continued
to make allocation of work difficult, and the Council has adopted the principle of paid
pupillage, one trainee inspector being at present on the establishment of the Public Health
Department.
The plight of old people was very much in the public mind during 1956 and there was
a considerable increase in the work done in Southall to help with the problem of old people
living alone or in need, and in all of these schemes the Health Department officers were able
and willing to assist in many ways.
I would like to acknowledge my indebtedness to the many individuals listed below who
have helped with this report by supplying information, and I would like also to extend my
sincere thanks to the Chief Public Health Inspector and to all members of the Departmental
staff for their help in the preparation of this report and for their loyal support at all times.
I am, Your Worship, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
Manor House, Southall.
Medical Officer of Health.
