Infectious Disease Visits.
During the year, the Health Visitors paid 899 visits with reference to cases of
infectious disease. One hundred and twenty-seven swabs were taken. The total number
of children examined by the Health Visitors in the schools was 2,078.
Uncleanliness and Verminous conditions in Schoolchildren.
I am obliged to Dr. H. M. C. Macaulay, the County School Medical Officer, for the
information on this subject:—
Number of children on roll at 31st December, 1943 6,545
Total number of examinations of children in the schools by the
school nurses 19,617
Number of individual children found unclean 646
Number of children cleansed under arrangements made by the
Local Education Authority 637
No legal proceedings were taken during the year with regard to uncleanliness or
verminous conditions relating to children attending schools in the Borough.
Prevention of Blindness.
No action has been taken under Section 176 of the Public Health Act, 1936, by
this authority for the prevention of blindness or for the treatment of persons suffering from
any disease or injury to the eyes. Several persons are, however, receiving assistance from
organisations who care for the blind.
Tuberculosis.
Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
The number of new cases notified during the year was 71.
Other Forms of Tuberculosis.
The number of new cases notified during the year was 9.
Of the total notifications 41 were notified from Institutions (Sanatoria 8, County
Council Hospitals 20, General Hospitals 13).
Deaths from Tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis of the respiratory system, 34; other forms, 6.

Action under these powers was not necessary during the year.
Venereal Diseases.
The Middlesex County Council is the authority under the Public Health (Venereal
Disease) Regulations, for the treatment of Venereal Disease in the County.
