Births and Birth Rate (figures for 1938 are given in brackets).
The total number of births notified to the Health Department under the Public
Health Act, 1936, was 797 (885). The total number of registered births in the district
(under the Births and Deaths Registration Act—included in the notified births above)
was 454 (479). The total number of live births belonging to the district whether
occurring within or outside the district was 805 (825). The illegitimate live births were
34 (31). There were 19 stillbirths (31), and these with one exception were legitimate.
This gives a live birth rate per 1,000 population of 15.28 (1575) and a stillbirth
rate per 1,000 total (live and still) births of 23.06 (36.21).
The birth rate grouped in five-yearly periods since 1892 is shown in Appendix A.

The monthly registration of births classified as to Wards is given in the following

table.

Infant Mortality.
The total number of deaths under one year of age was 47. The rate per 1,000
births was 58. The corresponding rate for England and Wales was 50, for London
48, and for the . 148 smaller towns 40 per 1,000.
This shows an infant mortality rate higher than last year when it was 54.
The infant mortality rate in five-yearly periods since 1892 is shown in
Appendix A.
The various deaths from stated causes at ages under one year of age are shown
in the subjoined table.
