Births and Birth Rate (figures for 1936 are given in brackets).
The total number of births notified to the Health Department under the
Notification of Births Acts was 860 (762). The total number of registered births
in the district (under the Births and Deaths Registration Act—included in the
notified births above) was 499 (524). The total number of live births belonging
to the district whether occurring within or outside the district was 814 (797).
The illegitimate live births were 38 (24). There were 33 stillbirths (30), and
these with one exception were legitimate.
This gives a live birth rate per 1,000 population of 15.79 (16.69) and a
stillbirth rate per 1,000 total (live and still) births of 38.95 (36.27).
The birth rate grouped in five-yearly periods since. 1892 is shown in
Appendix C.
The monthly registration of births classified as to Wards is given in the
following table.
