Tuberculosis.

The following table shows the new cases notified and the deaths from tuberculosis during 1938:—

Eight of the deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis and 3 of the deaths from non-pulmonary
tuberculosis occurred in persons who had not been notified as suffering from tuberculosis.
The number of cases of tuberculosis on the register at the end of 1938 was 469.
No action was taken under the Public Health (Prevention of Tuberculosis) Regulations,
1925, as no notified case was known to be employed in the handling of milk. No case was
removed compulsorily to hospital under Section 172 of the Public Health Act, 1936.

Cancer.
The deaths from cancer during 1938 numbered 154. The cancer death rate per 1,000
population in 1938 was 1.51 as compared with 1.27 in 1937, 1.36 in 1936 and 1.32 in 1935.
Reasonable facilities for modern methods of diagnosis and treatment are available in the district.
