and 22 premises are registered for this purpose. During the year 140 inspections of these
premises were made and three contraventions of the byelaws were remedied.
Rats and Mice Destruction.
No special action was taken in regard to the destruction of rats and mice. During 1938,
29 complaints of infestation by rats or mice were forwarded to the Superintendent of Rat Destruction
of Middlesex County Council.
Tents, Vans and Sheds.
During the year 97 inspections were made of tents, vans or sheds used for human
habitation and 44 contraventions of the byelaw; were found and remedied.
Under section 55 of the Middlesex County Council Act, 1934, proceedings were taken
against the owner of a yard and the occupiers of two caravans situated therein. The owner of
the land was fined 20s. and the occupiers of the caravans had to pay 4s. costs and remove the
caravans immediately.
Common Lodging Houses.
There are two common lodging houses in the Borough and both provide accommodation
for men and women. Eleven visits of inspection were made during the year and no contravention
of the byelaws was noted.
Cimping Sites.
No sites in the Borough were used for camping purposes during 1938 and no sites were
licensed under section 269 of the Public Health Act, 1936.
Shops and Offices.
During the year 71 visits were made to shops in regard to sanitary conveniences and
washing facilities. In 17 shops the sanitary accommodation, and in 2 shops the washing facilities,
were found to be insufficient. During the year additional sanitary accommodation was provided
at 4 shops and additional washing facilities at 2 shops. Six certificates of exemption in
regard to the provision of sanitary accommodation were issued and at the end of the year 15
contraventions of the sanitary provisions of the Shops Act, 1934, were outstanding.
Attention to the heating, lighting and ventilation of shops has been given by the Shops
Inspector attached to the Town Clerk's Department. During 1938, 170 inspections were made.
In ten cases deficient heating was found and in 2 cases poor facilities for the taking of meals in
the shop. The attention of the occupier of these premises was called to the necessity for
improvement and in all cases steps were taken to comply with the requirements.
No special attention has been given to sanitary accommodation in offices. It should be
noted that under section 43 of the Public Health Act, 1936, plans of new offices can be rejected
if they do not show the provision of adequate sanitary accommodation. Further, section 46 of
the same Act requires that sufficient sanitary accommodation be provided in existing offices.
