reinforced by four "Sollux" lamps for infra-red radiation. Two treatment sessions are held
weekly and at the end of the year 14 children under school age were receiving treatment.
Orthopaedic Treatment.

The following cases were referred from the welfare centres during 1938.

Refraction Clinic.
During 1938 25 children under school age were examined at the refraction clinic and
spectacles were prescribed in 14 cases. The cost of spectacles, spectacle repairs, etc., is assessed
on the same scale as for school children and in 12 cases the spectacles were obtained under this
scheme.
Minor Ailments Clinics.
The minor ailment clinics provided by the Education Committee are open to children
under school age. During 1938, 20 children under school age were treated.
Medical Out-relief.
This is carried out by the District Medical Officers appointed by Middlesex County
Council.
Venereal Disease.
Facilities for the diagnosis and free treatment of venereal diseases are provided by
Middlesex County Council. No treatment centre exists in the Borough and the nearest one is
at the West London Hospital. In necessitous cases fares are paid by the County Council.
Tuberculosis.
The diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis is undertaken by Middlesex County Council
and the dispensary serving this area is at 28, Bell Road, Hounslow.
School Medical Service.
This service is administered by the Heston and Isleworth Education Authority and a
separate report on this service has been submitted.
Insurance Medical Service.
The number of persons resident in Heston and Isleworth who are entitled to Medical
benefit under the National Health Insurance Acts is not known. During 1938, 3,390,331 prescriptions
were issued to insured persons in the County of Middlesex and at 31st December,
1938, the number of insured persons in Middlesex was 864,749.
Hospitals.
The Hounslow Hospital in Staines Road is a voluntary hospital with 72 beds. During
1938, 1,336 in-patients and 5,920 out-patients were treated.
The West Middlesex County Hospital in Twickenham Road, Isleworth, has 1,365 beds
and admits medical, surgical, chronic sick, maternity and mental cases.
Accommodation fori cases of tuberculosis is provided by Middlesex County Council and
for cases of infectious diseases by the South Middlesex and Richmond Joint Hospital Board at
Mogden Hospital, Isleworth. Hospitals in London and neighbouring districts are used also by
residents of Heston and Isleworth.
Midwives.
At the end of 1938 the number of midwives practising in the Borough was 28; of these
8 were municipal midwives, 7 were ambulance midwives attached to West Middlesex County
