FILLING AND EXTRACTIONS. | 1936. Permanent Teeth. | 1937. Permanent Teeth. |
---|---|---|
Fillings | 8615 | 10971 |
Extractions | 1711 | 1654 |
This shows in 1936 that for every permanent tooth extracted, at least 5 permanent teeth
were filled.
In 1937 for every permanent tooth extracted, nearly 7 permanent teeth were filled.
1936. Temporary Teeth. | 1937. Temporary Teeth. | |
---|---|---|
Fillings | 1387 | 1497 |
Extractions | 6948 | 6539 |
In many Reports of "The Health of the School Child," the pendulum swung violently
between Fillings and Extractions. One year it was this, next year it was that.
The present tendency is to discourage too much time being spent on filling these teeth,
in view of the evidential value of the same time being spent filling permanent teeth; to put it in
a simple way, its like a bush fire—cut away an area clear of bushes, and check the fire spreading,
so now we often take out a temporary tooth, to enable us to get at teeth with interstitial cavities,
which otherwise could not be got at.
