Maternal deaths arc investigated by the Medical Officer of Health as far as possible, in
junction with the medical practitioner in attendance, and the report is made on the prescribed form
to the Maternal Mortality Committee of the Ministry of Health. Some difficulty is experienced
in getting reports which are of any substantial value.
The maternal mortality rate is based on the number of deaths of mothers per 1,000 live
and still births. The number of live and still births during the year was 1,538. The incidence
of deaths of mothers following confinements in 1936, was 3 mothers died out of 1,538 or 1.95
per 1,000.
The rates for the previous years were 1933—4.89; 1934—2.93; 1935—4.0.
The rate for England and Wales was 3.65.
The rate for 1936 which was 1.95, is lower than for 1935, and the previous years. The
causes of death were as follows:—
1. Myocarditis, Acute Arthritis, Puerperal Pyaemia.
2. Myocardial Failure, Toxaemia, Puerperal Sepsis.
3. Peritonitis, Gastro enteritis, extra uterine pregnancy of about 7 months maturity.
All three died in Institutions.
Although there is no Municipal Maternity Home included in the foregoing arrangements
made by the Borough Council, there are 78 maternity beds at the West Middlesex County Hospital,
31 of which were added in 1936, providing a service which would otherwise become the
duty of the Borough Council.
