13.51% or 414 children had their vision diminished by 4 Snellen lines—a figure too large
to refract.
It will be noticed in Table I. that the figures rise in each column from "No change"
onwards, reaching the maximum in those decreased by 3 Snellen lines, then falling again, with
a very sharp drop between the decrease of 4 and 5 Snellen lines. Much the same rise and fall
is shewn in Tables II. and III., where the returns are classified according to sex.
An endeavour was made to refract the 25 children whose vision was decreased by 5
and 6 Snellen lines. They were dealt with as special cases and seen out of school hours on a
Saturday morning, Homatropine being used as the mydriatic instead of the usual Atropine
in use at the Eye Clinic. Twenty in all presented themselves for refraction, two were absent,
two had left school, and one refused examination.
It is difficult to classify these results, and therefore the refractions are given in full
corrected to infinity.
