it possible to pick out those children needing fuller examination since "under this condition,
if the child is hypermetropic he will read 6/6 possibly even more easily than before; if he is
emmetropic or slightly myopic the visual acuity will become less than it was before, and in
the latter case may diminish to 6/36."
This suggestion was put into practice at once in this District, but, as only two months
of the year remained, the figures were small and conclusions could not be drawn; a report of
them is given in the School Medical Officer's Report for 1931.
This year the use of the + 1 sphere has been continued and the results for the whole
year collected and tabulated. The testing was done with Snellen's Test Type at 20 feet,
natural vision being tested first and then the vision with a + 1 sphere placed before the
reading eye.
The vision testing was done, except in the case of 341 children, by the same nurse who
has been doing the work for years. All Infants have their vision tested ; those who were able
to read at the Routine Inspection are included in the Tables below—whilst those who could
not then read were noted to be re-tested at the following Re-inspection, but the figures are not
included in the Tables, as in some cases the Re-inspections have not yet taken place.
ROUTINE MEDICAL INSPECTIONS FOR THE YEAR 1932.
Tables shewing alteration in vision due to -placing a + 1 sphere before the reading eye
of 3,064 children whose vision was 6/6 or 6/9 without spectacles and who shewed no signs
of eye strain, and ivere therefore marked as requiring no treatment.

Note.— For the purpose of calculating the difference in vision in the Tables, all partly
read lines are counted as the line above, e.g. 6/6p is recorded as 6/9, and in cases where there
is a difference of vision between the*eyes the worse vision has been taken.
