189 children were also seen at the school clinics. The total number
of children excluded on account of nits and vermin during IQ28
was 120. Further reference to this subject will be found on pages
28 and 29 and Table IV. (p. 40).
Tonsils and Adenoids.
Out of 2,849 children examined at the routine inspections, 250
had enlarged tonsils, 122 of which were referred for treatment, 128
being kept under observation.
74 children had adenoids only, of which 32 required treatment,
and 42 were for observation, whilst 94 children had both
enlarged tonsils and adenoids, 76 requiring treatment, and 18
observation.
In many cases children marked for observation would probably
require operative treatment, but only very well marked cases were
referred for treatment on a first inspection, as the condition often
clears up with removal of carious teeth and general improvement
in the hygiene of the nose and mouth.
At the special clinics 42 other children were found to have
enlarged tonsils, 5 adenoids only, whilst 11 suffered from both
conditions.
The figures for enlarged tonsils, and enlarged tonsils and
adenoids found in the current year are very considerably larger
than those in 1927. For comments see p. 19, 20 and 21.
Tuberculosis.
Out of 2,849 children examined at the routine inspections,
there was one case of suspected tuberculosis of the glands requiring
to be kept under observation.
There were 4 definite cases of pulmonary tuberculosis found
at the special clinics and 8 were found to be suffering from
suspected pulmonary tuberculosis, whilst 7 children had tubercular
glands, 2 tuberculosis of the bones, and 1 other form of tuberculosis
8kln.
At the routine inspections, out of 2,849 children examined, 26
were found to be suffering from skin trouble.
