total of 1497 premises. Of these 801 had the nuisances remedied,
leaving 696 premises at which nuisances still existed at the end
of the year.
During the year, nuisances at 97 houses were reported to the
Health Committee, which added to the 40 brought forward from
1920, make a total of 137. Before asking authority to serve
statutory notices, the premises are inspected by the Medical Officer
of Health and Inspector of Nuisances. Statutory notices were
authorised and served in most of these cases, and by the end of
the year, the nuisances were remedied in 118 of the houses, leaving
19 cases to be carried forward in 1922.

It is my duty once more to point out that the staff of
Sanitary Inspectors is inadequate.
It must be placed on record that twice during 1920, recommendations
urging the appointmeut of a District Sanitary Inspector
to fill the existing vacancy, were sent forward by the Health
Committee to the Council, but were defeated.
Premises and Occupations controlled by Bye-laws or
Regulations.
There are 319 premises in this district which call for
periodical inspection such as the following: —
Houses let in Lodgings, Common Lodging Houses, Bakehouses,
Slaughter-houses, Cowsheds, Dairies and Milkshops,
Offensive Trades, Laundries (non-factory) and Workshops and
Work Places, etc.
