defects or nuisances discovered and the action or result of action
taken in regard to these. This includes the report rendered by
the Inspector of Nuisances for the year, 1919.
Nuisances, Contravention of Bye-laws, Defective Drainage, etc.
The number of unremedied nuisances* brought forward from
1918 was 394. The number of nuisances recorded during the year
was 655, but during the year 447 nuisances were remedied, leaving
602 premises in which nuisances still existed at the end of the year.
During the year, nuisances at 125 houses were reported to the
Health Committee, which added to the 7 brought forward from
1918, make a total of 132. Before asking authority to serve
statutory notices, the premises are inspected by the Medical
Officer of Health and Inspector of Nuisances. Statutory notices
were authorised and served in most of these cases, and by the
end of the year, the nuisances were remedied in 68 of the houses,
leaving 64 cases to be carried forward in 1920.
*More properly, houses in which nuisances were found.
In this connection, I may perhaps advert to the comments
of your Medical Officer in his reports for 1916 and 1917 as to
the greater difficulty and longer time taken in the remedying of
nuisances as compared with pre-war days. This difficulty and
delay still obtains and tends to increase the arrears of work due
to shortage of staff.
Premises and Occupations controlled by Bye-laws or
Regulations.
There are about 350 premises in this district which call for
periodical inspection such as the following:—
Houses let in Lodgings, Common Lodging Houses, Bakehouses,
Slaughter-houses, Cowsheds, Dairies and Milkshops,
Offensive Trades, Laundries (non factory) and Workshops and
Work Places.
With the return of two of the Assistant Inspectors from war
service, a beginning has been made with the complete revision
