The number of complaints received during the year regarding unsound
food was 106. These included references to extraneous matter in food and
a detailed investigation was made in each case. Informal action was taken
in the majority of cases, but in one instance it was necessary to institute
legal proceedings. Particulars of these proceedings are referred to later
in this report.
The complaints of extraneous matter in food included the following
Foreign matter in loaves of bread (3)
Glass in packet of dates
Foreign objects in sack of haricot beans
Stone in loaf of fruit whole-meal bread
Foreign matter in canned grapefruit
Insect in can of peach slices
Mould growth on packeted muffins
Paper in fruit malt loaf
Rubber band in portions of cheese spread
Foreign matter in packet of frozen peas
Mould growth on custard tarts
Fly in packet of prepacked bacon rashers
Mould growth in pork pies (3)
Mould growths on wrapped loaves of bread (2)
Foreign matter in bottles of milk (3)
Piece of lead in cornish pasty
Mould growth in packet of oats
Mould growth on fruit pie
Foreign matter in cooked sausage (salami)
Piece of wood in packet of biscuits
Foreign matter in bread rolls
