of the Borough of Wimbledon
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit the Annual Report on the work of the Public
Health Department for the year 1963. This Report is compiled in accordance
with the instructions contained in Circular 1/64 of the Ministry of Health,
and is on similar lines to previous years.
The Report shows that the health of the residents has been very good
during the year, and vital statistics compare favourably with those of the
country as a whole.
The Registrar General's estimated mid-1963 home population 56,980
shows an increase of 130 over 1962. Apart from an increase of 10 in 1960,
this is the first increase in population noted by the Registrar General, in
respect of Wimbledon since 1952, there having been a gradual but steady
decline in the population since that date.
Live births numbered 951 giving a birth rate of 15.84 per thousand of
the population which compares with 930 births and a birth rate of 15.85 in
1962. Of the 951 births, 66 or 7% were illegitimate. The live birth
rate for England and Wales for the year was 18.2.
Deaths from all causes numbered 748 as against 706 last year, giving a
death rate per thousand of the population of 11.54 compared with 10.39 in
1962 and 12.2 for England and Wales. The excess of births over deaths was
203 compared with 174 in the previous year.
