TETANUS IMMUNISATION
Active immunisation against tetanus is available for those who desire
it in the same way as other immunising procedures. Although not a common
disease, the mortality rate is high, and inmunisation is recommended.
During the year 901 children received protection and 486 received a
reinforcing dose.
POLIOMYELITIS VACCINATION
Protection against poliomyelitis continued to be offered throughout the
year to all persons up to the age of 40 years and certain other priority
classes. Persons over the age of 40 years may be vaccinated by their
family doctors.
Routine vaccination against poliomyelitis is new undertaken almost
entirely with oral vaccine.
The recommended course of this oral vaccine consists of three doses
each of three drops, given at intervals of four to eight weeks, and a
reinforcing dose is offered to all immunised children joining school. The
vaccine can be administered on a lump of sugar or in syrup.
Open clinics, where vaccination can be carried out without prior
appointment, continued to be held at Amity Grove Clinic, Raynes Park and
at Russell Road Clinic, Wimbledon on Saturday mornings throughout the
year, but were curtailed to monthly clinics during 1964.

The following table shows the position with regard to poliomyelitis vaccination at 31.12.63:-
