PEST CONTROL.

During the year 1962, 138 complaints were received concerning insect pests, and the following is a list of the infestations dealt with:-

The incidence of wasps was again generalised during 1962, and it is
considered that the service provided by the Department in the destruction of
wasps nests plays a great part in the Council's Food Hygiene Policy.
In addition, 22 complaints were received regarding squirrels, pigeons
and rabbits, and these were referred to the Pests Officer of the Ministry
Agriculture, Fisheries and Food at Guildford.
PETROLEUM (REGULATION) ACTS 1928 & 1936.
57 licences were issued by the Department to store petroleum spirit
during 1962, and the total quantity of petroleum spirit stored was 114,945
gallons. In addition, 28 licences were issued to store petroleum mixtures
involving a total of 12,974 gallons, and 3 licences were issued in respect
of the storage of a total of 4,628 lbs of calcium carbide.
113 visits were made to premises under the provisions of Petroleum
legislation.

Two offences relating to the storage of petroleum mixtures in excess
of the permitted quantity without a licence was the subject of legal proceedings.
In each case the defendants pleaded guilty and fines of £3.0.0. and £5.0.0.
together with costs of £2.2.0. and £1.1.0. respectively were imposed.
PET ANIMALS ACT 1951.
7 licences to keep pet shops were issued by the Department during 1962.
13 visits were made to these premises and any infringements of the conditions
of licence were rectified.
