of the
MEDICAL OFFICER
OF HEALTH.
Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Wimbledon, S.W.19.
(WIMbledon 6262)
August, 1963.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Borough of Wimbledon.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit the Annual Report on the work of the Public
Health Department for the year 1962. This Report is compiled in accordance
with the instructions contained in Circular 1/63 of the Ministry of Health,
and is on similar lines to previous years.
I am pleased to report that the health of the Borough during 1962 was
good and there were no special outbreaks of infectious disease.
Live births in Wimbledon in 1962 numbered 930, giving a birth rate, per
thousand of the population of 15.85 which compares with 892 births and a rate
of 15.18 in 1961. There has been a steady increase in the birth rate for the
past five years and the rate for 1962 was the highest recorded in the Borough
since 1948. Of the 930 live births 66 or % were illegitimate. The live
birth rate for England and Wales for the year was 18.0.
Deaths numbered 756 as against 706 in 1961. This gives a death rate of
11.03 per thousand population compared with 10.39 in 1961. The excess of births
over deaths was 174 compared with 217 in the previous year. The death rate for
England and Wales for the year was 11.9.
The number of infant deaths (under 1 year of age) was 13 out of 930 live
births which gives an infantile mortality rate of 13.97 per thousand live births,
one of the lowest rates on record. The infant mortality rate for England and
Wales for 1962 was 21.6 the same rate as in 1961 when the lovrest figure ever
was recorded.
Stillbirths numbered only 13 as against 17 in 1961, despite the increase
in the birth rate. There were no maternal deaths.
